Just curious if anyone else is working this line... My grandmother: Rettie Maye Martin b. 1913, Illinois Her Parents(my g-grandparents) Joel Arthur Martin (b.1872 Johnson Co., Illinois) & Lillie Maye Alley (b.1893 Johnson Co., Illinois) Joel's Parents (my gg-grandparents): Joel H. Martin (b.1841 TN d. 1926 Vienna, Johnson, IL)& Amy E. Russell (b.1842 Johnson, IL) Joel H.'s Parents (my ggg-grandparents): Nelson Martin (b.1820 NC d.1887 Johnson, IL) & Mary A. Casteel (b.abt 1820 TN d.1890 Johnson, IL) Mary's POSSIBLE Parents (my gggg-grandparents): John "Henry" Casteel (b.abt 1786 TN d.1870 Wayne, TN & Mary Elizabeth "Polly" ? (b.1784 Davidson Co, TN) Henry's POSSIBLE Parents (my ggggg-grandparents): John Henry Casteel who married Jemima (?) Looking for proof of Henry Casteel being Mary A. Casteel's father. Here is what I've determined so far: 1. Mary and Nelson had 10 children: Joel H., William Green, Genoria Ann, Martha J., James Henry, Mary, Nelson Alexander, Rosenciuos, & John Franklin. Definitely shows some similar name patterns between Mary's family and her possible father's family, Henry Casteel & Mary Elizabeth "Polly". 2. Also, Mary's name is listed with the middle initial "A" in the 1880 census in Johnson Co., IL. Her POSSIBLE brother, Andrew Casteel (who married Martha Caroline "Patsy" Hardin) had a daughter named Mary Ann Margaret Casteel. Another POSSIBLE brother - John J. - named a daughter Polly Ann and another daughter Martha Jane (Mary had a daughter named Martha J). Yet another POSSIBLE brother - Preston Henry Casteel - named one daughter Martha Ann and one Mary E. Casteel. 3. Mary is also listed as "Polly" (a common nickname for Mary)in the 1850 census in Johnson Co., IL. Probably because they were living with Daniel Kerley and his wife Mary...2 Mary's would've been confusing in the same household. Also, Mary's POSSIBLE father -Henry Casteel- was married to a Mary Elizabeth "Polly" - Mary's POSSIBLE mother. 4. In all of the trees that I have found on this Henry Casteel family usually there are only boys listed: John James, Andrew, Preston Henry, William Riley, & Edward. Occassionally, there is a Lucinda mentioned. There is a Lucinda Casteel who marries a Henry Long in Wayne Co., TN. I did find a connection between Henry Long and Henry Casteel, suggesting a relationship between the 2 families. Henry Long is listed with Henry Casteel's Letters of Administration in Apr 1873. Surely, there weren't just boys in this family. Possible, but not probable, and if there's 1 daughter, there could be more - maybe. 5. My Mary A. Casteel's probable birthdate is anywhere bet. 1822-1827. In looking at the Henry Casteel's children's birth dates, there is an "opening", if you will, for my Mary between Andrew (b. 1816) and Preston Henry (b.1823). Or bet. William (b.abt 1824) & Edward (b. abt 1827). (And room for others...) 6. My Mary's age varies from census to census. I've seen others list her birth year as 1820, but her age is different in each census: 1850 as 26yo (b.abt1824), 1860 as 38yo (b.abt1822), 1870 as 44yo (b.abt1826)& 1880 as 53yo (b.abt 1827). In Henry Casteel's household in 1840 (the year before my Mary married Nelson Martin) he had 3 females: 1 of course was his wife Polly, and the other 2 probably their daughters: 1 bet. 5-10yo (b.bet 1830-1835 and 1 bet. 10-15yo (b.bet 1825-1830). My Mary "fits" in the 10-15yo range AND Lucinda, as mentioned before as a probable sister, has a birth year listed as 1830, which would fit the probable second Casteel daughter in this household. O.K., I think that's all I have (for now). Is anyone else researching this particular line?
