In Reply to: Archilbald Casteel Question by David Casteel of 1961

Not only were there two Archibald Casteels, there were two Samuel Casteels of the same age. Here's my evidence as to who is who.

One Samuel Casteel b. 1836 VA was a son of William Casteel and Lucy Dingus. Some sources say he married Aggy. In the 1850 census William is in Scott Co., VA.

The other Samuel Casteel b. 1836 is a son of Archibald Casteel and is in the 1850 census in Barbour Co., VA.

The Samuel Casteel I am looking for lived in what became WV and married Malvina Uhl, who was from what became Wood Co., WV. Since Barbour Co., but not Scott Co., later became part of WV, according to the VA and WV GenWeb sites, I conclude that my Samuel is the son of Archibald Casteel. On www.familysearch.org and www.rootsweb.com Archibald is listed as the husband of Susan Sisler. The children for Archibald and Susan listed in your message fit with those sources. Three of those children (see below) married children of David Uhl and Wilhelmina de Steiguer, who was the daughter of the Swiss Baron John Rodolph (Rudolph) de Steiguer, who founded the Swiss colony in Athens Co., OH. David Uhl had acted as interpreter for the Baron when he arrived in Marietta,OH (just across the river from Wood Co., WV) in 1819 and even though he was much much older than Wilhelmina, the Baron insisted that his daughter marry David Uhl.

Children of Archibald Casteel and Susan Sisler who married children of David Uhl and his second wife, Wilhelmina de Steiguer:

Margaret Casteel m. Charles David Uhl
Ann Eliza Casteel m. Heber J. Uhl
Samuel Egnasus Casteel m. Malvina Uhl (sometimes listed as Lavina or Elmyra)

Malvina Uhl is listed on www.familysearch.org as the daughter of George Uhl and Wilhelmina de Steiguer, but George was actually David Uhl's son by his first marriage.

I have reasoned all this out from available information, but don't have absolute proof. I hope others can clarify, correct or add to this information.

Samuel Casteel and Malvina Uhl were married in La Salle Co., IL July 19, 1855, according to marriage records sent to me by the LaSalle Co., IL Genealogy Guild.

I followed them through the census:

1860 Grand Rapids, La Salle Co., IL
1870 Williams Twp., Wood Co., WV
1880 Red River Co., TX

Samuel is said to have died in 1908 in Oklahoma, per www.familysearch.org. Malvina d. 1919.

Children of Samuel and Malvina:

-Willard/William George b. 1856 VA or IL m. Mary, dau. G.A. (per 1880 census, Red River Co., TX-he is listed as Castell, G.W.-parents on same page)
-Frank (Alonzo) b. 1858 VA or IL
-Maggie b. 1860 IL m. W. J. Bennett (see 1880 census-same page as G.W. Castell)
-Daniel Leroy b. 1865 IL m. Bertha Mae Shrum (per message on this forum by Gary Casteel)
-Cynthia Ann b. 1867 IL m. John Calhoun McDonald (per www.familysearch.org; ch: Leroy d. young, Willard d. young, Nora Pearl m. ? 1908, Olive Fay m. ? 1928, & several more unnamed)
-Samuel David b. 1871 VA/WV (see message on this forum posted by Gary Casteel)
Flora b. 1876 (in 1880 census)VA/WV
Amanda Malvina b. 1878 IL? (not in 1880 census) but listed by www.familysearch.org
