Dear Barbra Jean - Have been researching the very roots of Edmond du Castel, known privateer, who swore the oath of allegience to William Penn on Sept. 10 1683. It has been proven that he bore a signet-ring with a coat-of-arms belonging to a distinguished Franco-Flemish family that are mentioned in French nobility calenders between 1700 and 1850 under the name du Chastel de Blangerval. This family originated in the city of Lille (now in northernmost France) under the name Dou Castiel, where members served under the castle of Lille as far back as the 13th century. In those days Lille was a thriving city in the autonomous county of Flanders, a county in the ancient sense that bore no more allegience to the king of France than it did to the king of England or the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. There is a Flemish version of Dou Castiel: van den Casteel /-e/ or Kasteel/ -e. The name Casteel was adopted by Edmond du Castel the second who purchased a Prince Georges County plantation in the year 1712 with inherited money from his father the privateer. I believe virtually all Casteels are his descendents. Would love to exchange more information with you!! Sincerely, D Casteel
