My husband's family name is Castañeda, with an ñ and an a, and they come from Santander Spain. Maybe, as your ancestors moved to America, they lost the ñ and the a got changed to an o. The word castaña means chestnut. Castañeda is a grove of chestnut trees. The Castañedas came to Bejucal, Havana, Cuba early last century. There is a research done way back, which I do not have available right now, but which I can find and post as soon as I can find it.
The Cuban branch of Castañedas have moved to Miami, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Federico and Enrique were my husband's father and uncle. Sebastian was their father.
My husband's name is Carlos, he had four brothers, all of them deceased, Orlando, Humberto, Federico and David, the nephews are in their 40's and 50's, living in Miami. My son Eduardo lives in Puerto Rico.
There is a branch of Castanedas in Mexico, and another in Peru. The famous author who had my husband's first name roo (Carlos), with an n, not an ˜˜was from Peru. There is another writer in Mexico named Jorge Castañeda (like my husband's nephew)
I do not know if any of this is of any help, but thought you might like to know what I know.
