After looking at the 1880 census I would probably agree with you. Two different Davids. One of the pages I was refering to is listed below. It is another persons view of things and there are no sources given. Here they give your David the two wives.

Yet another page gives your David a different father( no sources), but I would tend to accept the Church record as to his parents if you are sure of the birthday.
