Hi Nora:

After reading a full transcript of John Thomas Longino's will, this is what I think is by far the most likely conclusion: Martha Cassady was the step daughter of John Thomas Longino, not the daughter. In the will, JT takes care of his wife Sarah first, then gives a substantial bequest to Martha Cassady, and then lists all of his children. Martha is not included.

Sarah Cassady married John Bohannon on 19 May 1781 in Surry. This was his second wife, so it is likely as a widower he married a widow. John Bohannon died in 1789, only eight years later, and on 1790 the widow Sarah remarried John Thomas Longino. JT Longino wrote his will 15 September 1794 in Surry, mentioning Martha Cassady. A few months later, on 27 December 1794, Martha Cassady marries Jesse Vestal. Given the many Longino-Vestal connections this has to be the same Martha Cassady. None of the family names of the Longinos run through Jesse and Martha's family, and this would make sense if she was his stepdaughter rather than daughter.

I would think there are records which would flesh this out in Surry and elsewhere. There are no Cassady males in the 1790 Surry census, and since a marriage bond had to be taken out in the bride's county of residence, this also suggests that Martha Cassady's father was deceased.
