Cashman to Cushman

I'm researching my ggggrandfather, Franklin Cushman whose family is located in Massachusetts in the early 1800s. From everything I've learned my family has always referred to themselves as Irish and not English, but I can't find anything prior to 1820s for Cushman. Someone suggested that the name may have been changed TO Cushman to help ease settling in the US.

If anyone has any links or suggestions that might help me out, I'll be greatly appreciative.

Kevin Cushman
