It is my "theory" that the variations in the spelling of Cashatt, Coshatt and Cushatt all result from spelling it the way it sounded. Many folks did not write in 1800 and their name would have been spelled by others the way it sounded. If we are all a decendent of Andre Cochet, then I the Coshatt is closer to the original. Some west coast Cashatts pronounced our name to ryme with hay as in Ca shay, at the French would.
