Please allow me to be more clear about my thoughts when I say that the results are "useless" without the project participant's name and sourced lineage.
Let's say, for hypothetical purposes, that there is a male Cash researcher who is ready to take a y-DNA test, ok? If his results are going to be of any (genealogical) value, there needs to be some way that he can compare his results to a *proven* descendant of William Cash, Thomas Cash, or whomever Cash (it's not important which name is on this side of the equation).
If you want me to believe that your descent from X individual is indeed "proved," I (or the hypothetical DNA testing participant) need to see your DNA results, PLUS a sourced lineage as far back as you can possibly trace (so that I can see - with certainty - when your paper trail "falls off."
Otherwise, even with a perfect 999-marker/999-marker match, how could the potential DNA testing participant know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that his paternal ancestor in common with Project Participant 123 [as posted on the Surname Project website], is *William* Cash? After all, perhaps Participant 123 was wrong when he signed up to take his own DNA test, and he's not actually descended from *William* at all, but from *Some Other Cash* Male?
Makes pretty good sense to me; I hope it does to you, too.
Sorry that it took me two (long) messages to convey my thoughts!
Yours,
Justin
