One of my brick walls for several years now has been the ancestry of my 5g-grandfather William Cash of Nantucket, Mass., born 1740, married Mary Johnson, 25 May 1761, the first Cash of many on the island in the 18th and 19th centuries. I suspect he is probably descended from William of Salem, but have not made a connection to date, though, as always, there are potential records I have not yet made it to. Recently, I ran into another Cash descendent visiting from San Diego, at the Nantucket Historical Association library here. He gave me a genealogy that had been prepared for his mother in 1980, by a "D. Cash" of San Diego. I am guessing that this is the Don Cash whose book I hear mentioned here and there in Cash forums and which I see has recently been filmed by the Family History Library. The four-page report I was given, entitled "Genealogy of the Cash-Johnson Group of Nantucket Island," presents a lineage from William of Salem to William of Nantucket. This is the first such connection I have seen anyone make between the two Williams. (Elements of the early Salem generations are similar to those in the 1889 Driver family book, for those that may have seen that, which are in turn largely supported by Salem and Marblehead VRs. The Driver book, however, does not make the connection to the Nantucket Cashes.) The D. Cash report does not present sources for any of its conclusions. As much as I would like to break this brick wall, I am at present skeptical. While the Salem and Marblehead vital records support some of the information, other items appear questionable. (For example, Salem VRs show the births of five children of Wm. Cash, Jr.& wife Sarah Flinder, all with specific birth or baptism dates. This report makes a key connection by adding another child, as the third of six, that does not show up in the VRs.) There are other occurrences of what could be construed as a leap of faith.. My questions: -Is the Don Cash book itself well-sourced? Is there anyone that currently stewards his materials, so that I might check the origin of the info he has presented? -Are there any researchers out there who are working on the Massachusetts Cash lines and/or the Salem/Nantucket connection in particular? I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this. If anyone has any questions on the Nantucket Cash lines, I think I'm fairly well-versed there, or at least have access to the pertinent records. (I haven't yet composed a comprehensive report-hopefully someday.) Jim Powers Nantucket, Massachusetts
