Thanks for all your work. This was very helpful to me.
The one name that jogged my memory was Shay. I went through my grandmother's notes and it turns out that the Mary O'Neill who married Patrick Shay was Margaret and Nora O'Neill's older sister. My grandmother referred to her as "Aunt Mary Shay". Since Margaret O'Neill was my grandmother's grandmother Mary Shay would have actually been her great aunt.
My hunch is that Patrick and Timothy Shay were brothers. Although they could have been cousins or even father/son. But I do think they were related. This I will have to prove later.
I agree that the Abby who married Timothy Shay was probably Abbie O'Neill--Margaret, Nora, and Mary's mother. So what that means is that 2 brothers(or cousins, or father/son) married a mother and daughter.
The Clark County marriage link was also very helpful. It shows Mary O'Neil and Patrick Shay marrying on January 4th, 1860.
But a few lines above that is an entry for a marriage between Abia Casey and Timothy Shair on February 4th, 1860. I have a feeling that this might be Abbie Casey and Timothy Shay. The chart is a transciption from a roll of microfilm and I have a feeling that the handwriting was garbled and hard to read. Abbie's name at that point would have been O'Neill since she was married to Daniel O'Neill who died in 1859. Somehow her last name was recorded as Casey.
If I am correct in all of my assumptions this is the order of events:
Abbie Casey and Daniel O'Neill marry in Ireland.
Their daughter Mary O'Neill is born in Ireland in 1845.
Abbie, Daniel, and Mary travel to America and end up in Clark County, Ohio.
Daughter Nora O'Neill is born in 1854.
Daughter Margaret O'Neill is born in 1857.
Daniel O'Neill dies is 1859.
Mary O'Neill marries Patrick Shay in January 1860.
The widow Abbie O'Neill marries Timothy Shay in February 1860.
Mary and Patrick Shay and their children are on the 1870 Census. Mary and her children are on the 1880 Census but not Patrick.
Abbie and Timothy are on the 1880 Census but not the 1900 Census.
Mary Shay is on the 1900 Census living in Springfield, Ohio a few blocks away from her sisters Nora O'Neill and Margaret(who had married John Seggerson).
