Casaus from New Mexico

I am a Casaus from Albuquerque, New Mexico. My grandfather, George, is from Cuba, NM.

I do not know much about the Casaus name's origin, but am pretty sure that it is NOT an americanized version of something else. I have seen other Casaus in Spain. I have been told that the name is either from the Barcelona (Catalon) area or from Sevilla in southern Spain. Sevilla would make sense since the name does have a French sound to it and the French were prevelant in that area after the Moors were evicted.

My father showed me an historical record once that listed the first treasurer for the territory of New Mexico as a Casaus, so we seem to have been in the New World for quite a while. I am sorry I do not have any documentation to share.

It is a pretty unusual name, which makes it difficult to research. But, that also means that any other Casaus we encounter are likely to be fairly closely related.
