Dear Jan,
Since you know the year she died and you know where, you should be able to obtain a death certificate for her and it should list her parents, etc. This will give you a start. If you are just starting in genealogy, start with yourself and work back, generation by generation. Also,if your father is still living, check with him and see what he can tell you.
