Jonathan,

We know the date of Stephen's death from the obit of his wife:
Death source: Obituary of wife, Emma Humphrey - Vevay Reville - February 3, 1887 -
"She was born in the State of VA March 19, 1819, died at her daughter's Mrs. George Chase,
January 26, 1887 - age 67 years 10 months 18 days. She came with her parents to Switzerland County where she was married to Stephen Carver, October 10, 1839. She was mother of seven children - six of whom survive her. Her husband departed this life February 8, 1864. She united with Methodist Episcopal Church in Harrison County, IN in 1868. She had been sick since last May. She knew her death was near at hand and often spoke of it, saying she was ready to go when called. She loved the church and Sabbath School, and did much for the cause of Christ. "

The Federal census records do not show place of birth of parents until after Stephen's death. I believe that 1850 and 1860 only indicated place of birth of the individual.

I have never been able to find the death place or a record of Stephen's death. I do not believe that he died in Switzerland County. I also cannot find his grave. I have seen the grave of his wife.

All suggestions from everyone will be welcome.
