Charlotte, Yes Lydia married Bill Johnson and moved out west- New Mexico, I think. The rest matches my info. I wonder if the Bill Shewmake that married Mattie was the brother of Mary Agnes Shumake? She was only 8 years older than Mattie. May have been a cousin. Have you looked at the 1840 census for Shumake? I haven't yet. The county lines changed some around then so we may have to look in nearby counties - Carroll maybe? I am interested in going back further with William Carver but don't know where to start. Any suggestions?
