Jean, I have found a note that I made indicating that Mattie is a full sister to William Martin Carver. In my note, it says that she married a Bill Shewmake. So, if we compare the 1850 census in the household of William Carver and Mary Ann Shumake, lets see what we come up with: There is a James G. Carver, age 16, b. Alabama, that would make him being born in 1834, George W. Carver, age 13, born in Albama in 1837, William M. Carver, age 11, born in Ms., being born in 1839. Then there is a Laura, b. MS. age 8, Marion, b. MS. age 6, and Jessie A. b. MS. age 2. So, that means that Mattie must have been the oldest child of the first marriage. She would have been 18 in 1850 and had probably already married by the time the census was taken. So, if that is so, you are probably right about there only being the two children, Jessie Andrew and Lydia that belong to William Martin and Mary Agnes Shumake. I also have a note that Lydia married a Bill Johnson. Does some of this agree with some of your information? Compare some of this information with what you have. Charlotte
