Katherine, I think I can provide the source for that erroneous information about WILLIAM Maultsby Carver being the father of THOMAS who migrated to Wilson County, TN. A distant cousin of mine, Anne Carver Graves, hired a person to help her research the Carver family, along with others from whom she was descended. It is her line that is included in Burke. For years, I blithely accepted her "findings." Even went to Byberry Meeting House, (now in greater Philadelphia) where the original immigrant couple, JOHN CARVER and MARY LANE, lived and worshipped. Several years ago, I found that the THOMAS CARVER (b. November 2, 1757 in Stafford Co., VA) was the son of WILLIAM CARVER and his wife, SARAH, as recorded in St. Paul's Register. WILLIAM CARVER (b. July 2, 1737 in Stafford Co., VA) was the son of THOMAS CARVER and MARY CLIFT, who were married in that County on November 10, 1727. WILLIAM (b. 1737) and his son, THOMAS (b. 1757) migrated to North Carolina and owned land adjacent to each other in what is today Person County. It appears that CLARY LORD CARVER died around 1800-5 and THOMAS brought his family west to Wilson County, TN, where he soon married again, the MARGARET (MOTHERAL) DONELSON. One son of THOMAS settled in Jackson Co., TN, and WILLIAM (b. 1781) the eldest, remained in Person Co, where he married ANNIS LEA on October 18, 1808, after which they, too, settled in Wilson Co. The names given to the children of THOMAS and CLARA are LORD, STRATTON, and DERRICK family names, with the usual JOHN, THOMAS, and WILLIAM being in both paternal and maternal lines. Hope this helps to clarify things.
