Hello, My great grandfather, William Louis Caruthers, was born in 1853. The problem comes when the family story was passed down that he was born in "Harpers Ferry, GA, a suburb of Athens or Atlanta. And he remembered vividly the raid by John Brown during the Civil War." Well, the problem is that the raid by John Brown happened in West Virginia, which is where I thought Harpers Ferry was anyway. It is listed on his death certificate that his birth place was "Athens GA" at this point though, I do not know that I believe this to be true. I know that he came to Memphis with his parents and two sisters when he was 10 (so about 1863) He was the only boy in his family and he was a carpenter who worked on ships and went up and down the Mississippi River. I have one picture of him, a death certificate, and a copy of his death notice (which by the way also says, "Hapers Ferry GA") I DID happen to find him and his sisters in the Memphis directory in 1880. It lists him and his sisters (living in the same house) His sisters names were Lea Carruthers & Emma Carruthers. I have no clue who their parents are. The only remote clue that I have is that a man with the same initials is in the Memphis Directory in the 1872 version as W.L.B. Carrithers, telegraph repairman, living at 36 3rd St with an Mrs. M.E. Carithers living at the same place. In the 1872-1873 version, it lists Mrs. M.E Caruthers at 36 3rd & William L. B. Caruthers, brakeman, M & O R R (railroad) living at 36 3rd St. Then it jumps to the 1880 dir. that I transcribed earlier. I have a feeling that these could be William, Lea, & Emma's parents and just died before the 1880 dir was made. It also lists William Jr., Lea, & Emma's place of residence as 58 2nd street, which is terribly close to 3rd St. Anyway, I was wondering if you had any of these names in your data base. They are driving me CRAZY!! Thanks, Jennifer Notify Administrator about this message?
