Hold onto your hats - I have a mystery on my hands here. I'm searching for any information on Rufus Morgan Carty and his family. Here is what I have so far: He was a coal miner, born 3 May 1882 and died abt 1940. His first wife was Martha E. Kilgore, born abt 1885 and died sometime during the 1920's. He lived most of his life in Kenady, Dickinson, Virginia. Children listed on the 1920 Census are: Nannie M, born 25 Oct 1908, d. Nov 1984 (listed on 1910 census as Nancy, possible misspelling?) George, born abt 1911 James M. born abt 1913 John H., born abt 1920 Eva M., born abt 1918, married Rufus Hammonds (1895-1978, children: Kermit, Jerry Randy) Children not listed on the census: Minnie Viola born 1918/19 (we know she was 29 in 1947 when my mother-in-law was born) who married Henry Winebarger; Rufus; Maynard *Living family members do not recognize the name John H. as one of Rufus Morgan and Martha's children - it is possible he died young. *Martha died in the early 1920's of TB when Minnie Viola was about 3. *After Martha’s death Rufus married Mattie (Winebarger) Woodruff. Rufus Morgan was Mattie's 2nd marriage. She first married a Woodruff, then a Salyer, then Walt Page. She is the daughter of Samuel Winebarger and Amanda Greear. *It is possible that Minnie, Rufus and Maynard were living with friends/relatives at the time of the 1920 census due to Martha’s illness. *It is also possible that James M. is James Maynard. *Mattie and Rufus did not have children together. Minnie's daugher indicated that Mattie did not help raise any of the children, that the children may have all been grown when she married him, and we are just not sure when she married Rufus Morgan. *1930 Census does not appear to list any Rufus Morgan Carty (or variation of that)living in or near Dickinson Co., VA. A search of Russell and Wise counties were also fruitless, though living family members insist that is where he lived and died. The are sure, however, that he died sometime during the 1940's. Does anyone have any information on this Carty or his children, parents or wives?? This isn't just a brick wall, it's a titanium one! :) Thanks for your help, Jenni Notify Administrator about this message?
