September 20, 1994 Personal Letter
Dear Carol Lim, (genalogist)
I read the peice in the Plattsburgh Press about information on the Carto
family. My grandmother was a CARTO. She was Matilda May CARTO and was born
in 1843. She was the daughter of James and Salome CARTER. She married
George SEAMANS - which was my grandfather. My grandmother passed away
before I was born, so my grandfather's second wife was the only grandmother I
knew. Grandma Mary Matilda CARTER is burried in the old cemetery in Perry's
Mills. My cousin, Dr. Clifford SEAMANS , gave me the information (his mother
had left him the information): The CARTO's were French Hugenots but due to
persecution, they came to Canada. Their original name was MARTO but the
English Immigration Officer kept saying CARTO. So, they were afraid of being
refused entry; they agreed to CARTO. They came to Perry's Mills before my
grandfather, George SEAMANS . The stone on the Perry's Mills Cemetery has
one 18 year old died in 1st 3 months of the Civil War who died from disease-
not wounds. Some of the other CARTO family are on the stone. ...I have not
been to the Perry's Mills Cemertery for many years, however I plan to go. My
grandfather and his second wife are burried in Glenwood, Champlain, NY. My
mother Louise Grace SEAMANS, who's mother was Matida CARTO, is burried in
Moores Forks, NY. I am now 84 years of age and would like to hear fron you.
Hope this information will help you. I can't tell you what part of Canada
they came from. "
