Drew,
Your family were members of the Kingsmill Presybterian Church. There is a delightful book at the LDS Family History Center in Salt Lake City: History of Kingsmills Presbyterian Church 1788-1988. I had a great time reading it, and gleaned alot of info from it. Reverend Meeke made the earliest known list of communicants of the church in 1864. Families are listed together, by towns they lived in (it seemes that parents were listed first, then the children).
In Divernagh- the McIlroy family:John, Agnes, James, and Margaret Ann (p. 251)
the Cartmill family: David, Margaret, Agnes, Sarah and David (p. 251)
in Knockavannon/Outlacken/Ballymoyer/Cavanakill/ Lurgana
King family: William, Mary, Samuel, Mary Jane (Mrs. Auterson), William, Martha, John, Sarah, James, Agnes, andElisabeth (p. 253)
in Eshwary/Tullywinney was another King famiy
John, Margaret, Mary, Joseph, and Martha (p. 251)
on page 40, in describing some history, it states: "A close examination of any old grave stones, still remaining, reveal the names of some of the families who founded the Church- names like.... McIlroy's from Rathcarbery... Kings from Outlacken..."
As a side note, Kingsmills Presybterian Church was formed in 1842, some of the parishoners came from Mount Norris (formed 1833) and Tullyallen (formed 1795).
another note, town names are interesting:
Rathcarbery (Rathcarbry)the fort of the O'Cairbre family
Tullywinney- Sunset Hill
Divernagh (Duvernagh)- the two gaps (probably in the dyke protecting the border of Ulster)
In another book: County Armagh, 100 Years Ago [1888](also at the Family History Center), on page 251, in the Subpost office of Camlough in 1881, are David Cartmill, Divernagh; John King, Sturgan; and James McElroy, Sturgan. They are listed under farmers and residents. The population of Camlough in 1881 was 192... It gives this information about Camlough: "Camlough is 3 miles, Irish, west of Newry, on the direct road to Newtownhamilton. The nearest station is Bessbrook, Belfast Junction Railway, a mile and a half. Its chief importance is derived from a fair held on the third Monday of every month, which is usually good for cattle, and improving for horses. With few exceptions the houses are well-built, and maintained in good condition. Mr. John G. Richardson owns the estate. For the most part the land of the district is light and rocky. Oats, potatoes and flax are the chief crops. Camlough, the crooked lake, is situated less than half a mile above the village.. It is a handsome sheet of water, a mile and a half in length. In winter, at deepest point, it is 55 feet...." (p. 250)
I assume you have the baptism dates for the children of David and Agnes...
For marriage records where David Cartmill is listed as father I have:
Mary Jane to Joseph Buchanan (17 Sep 1852) in Kingsmills Presbyterian (her mother was Margaret Phillips)
Mary Ann (you have her as Margaret?) to James McIlroy (16 Oct 1857 in Kingsmills)
Elizabeth to Thomas Cartmill (son of Thomas Cartmill- brother to my gggrandmother Jane Cartmill) on 14 Oct 1864 in Bessbrook
Agnes to James Graham (19 Jan 1871 at Newry Registry Office)- witnesses were Samuel Henry Cartmill and Mary Cartmill (don't know who this Mary could be- Samuel didn't mary Mary for 5 more years)
Samuel H. to Mary Mills (2 Jan 1876 at Kingsmills)
and Samuel H. to Annie Barron (5 Jun 1912 at Kingsmills)- this may have been a 2nd marriage- one witness was Letitia Cartmill, probably the youngest daughter of David and Agnes (at least she is the only Letitia I've come across so far, and she would have been 21 at the time)
I hope that some of this is helpful. You may want to email SuAnn directly- she's wonderful and may have more information on your common ancestors.
Let me know if there are other names you would like me to look up in the information I copied...
Best Wishes,
Susan Cartmill Malone :-)
