Hi Ann - I live in Lytham St.Annes on the Fylde Coast so I don't have to travel far to trace my ancestors. I am descended from Nicholas Cartmell (born 16/8/1719) who was the eldest son of George & Grace (nee Wade) and the brother of William Cartmell (alias Carpenter). You will find your ancestor Richard Cartmell who married Margery Bond living at Cross Ramper on the 1871 Census return. I have 4 children of this marriage listed. Elizabeth b.20/6/1867, Agnes b.27.2.1870, James b.22/5/1873 and John Thomas b.30/7/1876. One other small piece of information concerning Elizabeth - she is listed on the 1881 Census return as being a servant at the Bay Horse Inn, Thornton age 13. On the same Census John & Agnes were living at Underbank, Thornton. He is described as an agricultural labourer aged 84 born Layton & Agnes ,his wife, aged 74 born Preesal. Richard & Margery were living at Holmes, Thornton. Richard is described as a horsebreaker aged 34 born Thornton and Margery, his wife, aged 33 born Thornton. Their other children Agnes age 11, James age 7 & John age 4 were living at home & all listed as 'scholar'.
