A land grant to William Chambers in 1693 for land in Surry Co. refers to the will of a William Carter proved in Surry Court on March 8th, 1669 (hard to decipher - date could easily be 1664) and for which land “Wm Batt dyed levied off”.Who is this William Carter - the referenced will date doesn’t fit with the death year for William Carter Sr. or Jr. of Surry?

William Batt was in Surry Co. upon its formation from James City Co. and like William Carter Sr. owned land on Lower Chippokes Creek and Sunken Marsh. He largely disappears from the records around 1660.He is shown by the Surry Co., VA deeds below to have purchased land from William Powell the elder of Surry, England, William Parke and wife Ann (grandchild of William Powell the younger) of Leadenhall Street in London.Alice (Croxon) Carter, widow of William Carter Sr., married 2nd Giles Parke. It seems like there would be a connection, but I haven’t been able to connect these Parkes.I also noticed the will of Daniel Parke d. 1679 (London, but formerly of Virginia) named Coll. Edward Carter one of his executors in trust in England. I presume this is Edward Carter d. 1682 of England, formerly of Nansemond, VA.

Batt [WILLIAM BATT] of Chippoakes Creek, Collonye of Va., of the other part.Wm. Powell…Wm Parke and Ann his wife for certain consideration sell all their rights to 800 acres of land, late of the sd. Bailey, John White, Robert Fox, Fra. Mayo.
Note:References to the land transfers in the Virginia deeds above can be found in the Lord Mayor’s Court of London.Within those records, William Parke and wife Ann are stated with the surname Parker, not Parke. Both William Powell the elder (Baker of Surry, England) and William Powell the younger (Virginia – left two sons, Saml. and Geo.) were natural sons of John and Hester Powell.Depositions explain that both William Powells were so named after their godfather(s) and that William Powell the elder was “at ye time of this deponent’s birth [William Powell the younger’s birth] was very dangerously sick in so much as his parents and friends did dispare his life, & for these reasons did also name him William”.
