Ya got the basics on the Barford Carters, but not quite as simple as you stated it.However, we have learned a quite a bit, which is worth sorting out:

Biography and Notes:
George of Caroline 2. CarterBuried:
"George Carter of Parish of St. Margaret's, Caroline Co., VA made his will 22 April 1789; proved Sept. Court 1789 in which he mentions a tract of land lying in Orange Co. He mentions wife, Frances Diana Carter and children, but mentions only one child by name - Goodloe Carter, who is under age. His brother, Benjamin Carter and friends, John Stevens of Caroline and Henry Goodloe are executors. Witnesses: Richard Willson, Phebe Goodloe and Joseph Carter."
The George Carters of Middlesex and Spotsylvania
Spotsylvania County Records by William Armstrong Crozier Copyright Baltimore
Southern Book Company 1955
Deed Book A 1722-1729:
"3 February 1729. Feby. 3d, 1729. Winnifred x Tillary of Spts. Co. "for the natural love and
affection which I have for my children, John Tillary, my son, and Mary Tillary, my daughter,"
etc. Goods and chattels.
Witnesses: George x Carter, Jno. Adcock, Elizabeth x Carter. Rec. Feby. 4, 1728-9".
Is the above indicating George and Elizabeth signed with their marks, or that the middle initials were illegible?

2. Unknown Source:
My records show that George Carter was born Apr. 22, 1692 in Middleesex Co.,Va and was the son Of William Carter and Mary Goodlow. Things get real messy in the Middlesex to Spotsylvania Co., Va. records. George married Eliz. Ann Proctor about 1710 in Middlesex Co. She was the daughter of William and Ann (unknown) Proctor.Their daughter Ann, married John Lea in the 1740's. They later moved to NC.
proven by above.
3.From Paul Carter:
The George Carter who married Frances Goodloe and died in Caroline Carter is not the son of Joseph and Catherine, rather the son of George and Elizabeth...... First, this George Carter of Caroline's will states an executor Brother Benjamin. ...... George mentions son Benjamin per the following deed: 4 Dec 1749 George Carter and wife Elizabeth to John Pain 25 acres "whereon said George Carter's son Benjamin now liveth" (see Crozier page 181)..... Joseph and Catherine's son George was in Buckingham County in 1766. George 'of Buckingham' sold in 1766 95 acres of the land he inherited from dad Joseph, and John turned around and sold this same 95 acres to son-in-law david Lively in 1795 prior to his departure to Buckingham Co. I have traced the deed boundaries, and they match.

Another George - note the difference between Mary Goodloe and Diana Goodloe,
certainly grounds for confusion:
George CARTERBirth: 1728 in Lancaster County,VADeath: 1788 in Spotsylvania County,Va.
Note: George Carter (1728-88) served as private in the 2d regiment, Virginia militia. He was born in Lancaster County; died in Spotsylvania County, Va. [could be early Caroline]
Marriage 1 Frances Diana GOODLOE b: 1764Married: 1783 ....??? married at (true) age fifty nine ???
........ yep ........................
Anyway, George (son of George Carter of Spotsylvania) Carter's wife remarried John Pollock and he became the administrator of the estate. It is possible he was a neighbor and became administrator prior to his marriage to the widow.Henry Goodloe was a witness to this administration[4], and George's land was sold to Roger and William Bell, neighbors to Joseph Carter of Spotsylvania's (1751) son John who moved to Orange and married Polly Bell.
In the Chancery suits [5] we find Goodloe Carter versus John Pollett et al (no date).Goodloe states that George Carter published his will 22 Apr 1789 and directed his executors to sell his lands in Orange Co. and purchase other lands to keep together his estate until his son, Goodloe Carter, should come of age.George died and left his widow Frances Deanna Carter and children Goodloe Carter, Joseph Carter, and Phebe Carter. The widow became the administratrix and soon married John Pollet.Goodloe Carter is now of lawful age but Joseph Carter and Phebe Carter are still infants.Ths suit continued at least through March 1808, when John Pollet states that Joseph Carter, brother to Goodloe, died intestate.I have no further information on this suit and its conclusion. Goodloe removed to Woodford County Kentucky where his descendants live to this day.
An article in the "Kentucky Genealogist" (date unknown) called "The Familv of Parson Henry Goodloe," states that per Bible records of Harriet Harris (Goodloe) Ridgley of Chicago 1llinois: "Frances Diana Goodloe born I July 1764; died 18 April 1835. She married first in 1783 George Carter and secondly John Pollet." This surely refers to this George Carter.
Some Random Notes:
1.There is an unknown George Carter who took the Oath of Allegiance in Henry County in 1778 *
2.He is NOT George instant ** - as proven above by the extensive work of Joe Carter
3.There is no info on the George Sr., son of Thos of Barford, also known to have been in Caroline
- let's call him George of Caroline 1. - known sons Presley, Richard, Spencer et. al. ***

The George who married Rickman in Henry / Parick remains a mystery:
George CARTER27 FEB 1722/23 in Middlesex, VA
BET. 1 MAR 1803 - 7 JUL 1819 in Patrick Co., VA ???
Father: George CARTER b: 22 APR 1692 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co VA
Marriage 1 Frances RICKMANon 9 AUG 1782 in Henry Co., VA[* the oath taker of 1778?]
Eleanor CARTER b: ABT. 1783 *** names of children eliminates George of Thomas
Lucinda CARTER
Silas CARTER
Lots of erroneous information:
Note: Notes of Dr. O. Norris Smith, copies from Patrick Co., VA Historical Society. **
Undocumented claim that the George Carter who was the father of Eleanor Carter and husband of Frances Rickman was also the George Carter mentioned as son in the will of William Carter of Middlesex County dated 16 Nov 1709 and as grandson in the will of George Goodlow of Middlesex County, Va, dated 7 Dec 1710.
[not quite - his nephew, eh?]whole entry quite questionable - leave for future reference - You Betcha':

Let me tell you what I found when I was in Washington, DC.... [completely fallacious on it's own]
You know that Hezekiah Smithson's wife, Henrietta Carter. Well Henrietta's father's name is Presley Carter, and mother is Anne Waddell..? Presley Carter's parents names are George Carter and Frances Diana Goodloe....
I found Frances Diana Goodloe's parents........Henry Goodloe and Frances Diana Kemp.........Henry is a American Revolution Patriot......was a Sgt. from VA. I found this information in the DAR Patriot files........ found us another one....
Have a good one..? Barb
And then, Dr. Smith next blithely mixes two or three George Carters together: the Justice of the Peace, Ensign and Captain George Carter of Pittsylvania who took the Oath of Allegiance with his sons John and William is proven beyond doubt to James Carter of Stafford, son of Capt. Thomas Carter Sr. of Barford, Lancaster County, Virginia. This family is rather well documented in Wythe County, Virginia by 1781.
Separately, there a dozen patents or so for a George Carter on the south fork of the Mayo (in Henry/Parick); however, there is no evidence of any of these being occupied.
A second view of this same George - dates of birth and two Fanny's are legitimate confusion!!!
