Peyton Carter wrote above that,
"I have a DNA match to Charles Carter of Chesterfield Co.
(living there in the 1780s and 1790s). I don't know if
this is the Charles listed in the will of George of
Mecklenburg in 1771. I don't know if the Mr. Hinton
named in the will of George is supposed to be Hylton,
a family the Carters in Chesterfield associated. I
do believe that Armstead Carter and his brother Robert
are connected to this Charles Carter, but not sure how
they connect to George of Mecklenburg."

I'd like to make two minor points.
-->First, the George Carter will with James Hinton as a witness and executor was presented for probate in Brunswick County in 1771. Though George Carter also lived in Lunenburg and elsewhere in the 1760s, the most documentation is found in Brunswick. Carter's father-in-law's will was in Mecklenburg County in 1782, but the former Mrs. Lucy Carter remarried in 1777 in Brunswick County and her will was probated in 1821 in Brunswick County. So, for clarity, I usually identify this Carter man as "George Carter of Brunswick County."
-->Second, the name James Hinton versus Hylton. My guess is that the surname really is either Hinton or Henton. My reasoning is that according to my notes made from looking at the microfilm, the name appears 4 times in the recording for probate [viz.: 1) James Hinton to care for son Charles Carter until John Carter can take him, 2) James Hinton named as executor, 3) James Hinton witnessed will signing, 4) James Hinton refused to take on the burden of administering.] It seems unlikely that a spelling error or mistranscription would have been repeated four times. Especially since James Hinton probably appeared in person to make his refusal of administration, so that the recorder would likely have heard the name spoken in the courtroom. And I do find a James Hinton in Brunswick deeds in the 1760s, so such a man truly existed in the area.

I remind future readers that I am a Hooper researcher, not a Carter researcher, so my interest is in the offspring of George Carter and Lucy Marshall, 2 daughters who married sons of Obadiah Hooper, Sr. of Lunenburg County, VA. Both these women eventually lived in Franklin County, Georgia.
