According to the Chesterfield County Circuit Court in Virginia, there is a will and inventory for an Armstead Carter from 1795 (WB 5/137 and WB 5/34). I have ordered copies. Hopefully this will shed some light on the family of Charles Carter (b.1757), who moved to Chesterfield from Essex and raised his family there, including a son named Armstead.
