Carter roots go back to Bristol in England, but some folks would be surprised by the route taken to California........
Alfred Tom Carter born November 1846 in Bristol,UK, married Mary Fanny Ayers in Sydney, Australia, in 1869. Mary was born in 1847 in England. Alfred went to Melbourne by 1870 where his two children were born. He took his family to San Francisco, California, in 1887. He was a clerk, took US citizenship in 1888 and he is on the San Francisco voters rolls in 1896 and 1898, and in the 1900 census he was a commercial clerk. In 1907 he was an elevator operator living with his wife and son Walter at 39 Sanchez St, San Francisco county. He and his wife were still there in 1912. In 1918 he was retired and living with Walter's family at 3824 Foothill Boulevard, Alameda county.
1. Horace Valentine Carter born 14 February 1870 at 112 Latrobe St, West Melbourne, married Annie Louise Haedrich on 14 January 1896 at San Francisco. Annie was born in December 1872 in California, daughter of Herman and Mary Haedrich. Horace was a manager of shoe stores in Oakland City, California, died 25 February 1950 at Alameda co, California. He was naturalised in 1940. He was a member of the Yerba Buena Masonic Lodge no 403 in Oakland.
2. Walter Reginald Carter born 10 December 1873 at North Melbourne Vic, married Katherine Reid, by 1912 he was a clerk in Oakland City, California, and then later he was a shoe salesman. He died 4 September 1949 at Alameda co, Calif. He was a life member of the Retail Clerks Union and a member of the Fruitvale Christian Church. Katherine was born 21 September 1884 at Hanford, California, daughter of James McClelland Reid and Sophia Augusta Besing Parker, and died 8 July 1960 in Alameda, Oakland. They had one son, Walter Robert (Robert) Carter, born 12 July 1909 at Oakland, died 26 May 1995 at Oakland, was a clerk for a wholesale drug company there in the 1930s, married Lucille M..... and had a child Danton Robert Carter.
