I'm still searching for concrete facts to drive my lineage definitively back, but I suspect, as I have had to along the way, the best way to do this is to create a good theory on circumstantial evidence and see if it leads somewhere. Most of what I write here, I have written before over various posts, but now I will try to pull it together.
I am looking for the father/lineage of William Carter, who married Jane Scott in Powhatan County, VA in 1798. I believe him to be the father of Mary Elizabeth Carter (? - 1839), who married Silas M. Baughn (1806 - 1863) in Cumberland County, Virginia in 1831; Elizabeth's mother, Jane Carter, was surety on the bond.
I am looking for a possible connection to a Richard Baughn, who is listed on the 1850 Census as living on the plantation of William Ryland Carter in Amelia Co., VA. No other Baughns are present. I am thinking that young Richard may be a cousin, through his mother, Mary Elizabeth Carter, and he went to live at the Carter plantation just after his mother died, when he would have been about a year old.
In the Elliott book of Marriage Records for Cumberland County the entry for the bond for the marriage of Silas Baughn and Mary Elizabeth Carter in 1831 includes “teste: Willaim A. Carter.” I suspect this to be her brother and a son of William Carter and Jane Scott.
There is a William A. Carter living in Amelia in 1860 with his wife, Mary F. Carter, and daughter Mary P.H. Carter. He is 58 years old, so he could be the one listed as teste on the Baughn/Carter marriage.
John Carter's first wife was a daughter of James Vaughan and Lucy Jeter. Due to the Jeter connection, there is strong evidence that John was connected to Phoebe Carter, born 1751, who married Presley Jeter in Amelia in 1783. Her will is found in Lunenburg County, VA in 1819, in which she mentions her brother John Carter. It is possible that John of Amelia, husband of Vaughan, may be that brother OR....
John of Amelia was born in 1775. Phoebe was born in 1751. That's a lot of years over which a common mother to have children (but not impossible). Maybe John, the brother of Phoebe, is the FATHER of John of Amelia AND William of Powhatan.
William Ryland Carter of Amelia (1809 – 1886), the son of John Carter and Miss Vaughan, is referred to in family papers as “William R. Carter Jr.” Since I know his father is John, William Sr. has to be another family member, perhaps….an uncle. This William, who marries Jane Scott in Powhatan could be John’s brother.
I do not know a relationship between this William A. and my William R., but I do see William A. listed in the papers of William R. as someone he lent $12 1/2 to. I am speculating they may be first cousins. If William A. is the brother of Mary Elizabeth, then she too is a first cousin of William R., making Richard Baughn, her son living on the plantation of William R., first cousin, once removed to William R.
A daughter of William R. Carter, Lelia Harriet Carter (1853-1926), married Samuel Tinsley and they had a sole son named Powhatan. I see no evidence of the name Powhatan on the Carter or Tinsley side. Did this come from the county because the Carters were from there? Family folklore from one branch says these Carters came from Goochland. Powhatan was once part of Cumberland, which was part or Goochland.
There is a Jane Carter who appears on the 1860 Census in Amelia County, as being 85 years old, living with a Gracey Carter, aged 35. This Jane would have been born in 1775. If she is Jane Scott, she would have been 23 years old at the time of her marriage to William Carter, which would make sense.
So, are John of Amelia and William of Powhatan brothers along with Phoebe Hatchstt of Lunenburg, or are these two men brothers and their father is a John Carter who is the brother of Phoebe?
