Looking for John Carter in Goochland
The search for a particular John Carter in Goochland County, Virginia and neighboring counties during the 18th Century can be a daunting task. Not only were there numerous men with this name but their county of residence changed over time even though they remained put.It was possible during this time for one to settle a piece of land in Henrico County, Virginiain 1727, be in Goochland County between 1728 and 1749, in Cumberland County between 1749 and 1777 and then be in Powhatan County in 1778 never having moved. Similarly a suitably placed tract of land in Buckingham County, Virginiatoday would have been in Albemarle County between 1744 and 1761, in Goochland County between 1728 and 1744 and in Henrico County prior to that.
I am aware of long running searches for a John Carter who married a Mourning Bond in 1794 and may have been the son of another John Carter andfor a John Carter with sons William Ryland and Beverly Atwood.I will add another two to the mix.
In county court held 27 Oct 1783 [OB 1779-1784/459] in Cumberland Co., VirginiaJohn Carter father of William Carter provideda certificate dated 11 Mar 1782 and signed by Thomas Young a captain in the WB. Whereby it is certified that the said William Carter soldier in the said captains company enlisted in the western battalion for the defense of the western frontier of Virginia agreeable to an act of assembly passed at Williamsburg 3 May 1779 and that he the said Carter was killed in the service and the said John Carter made oath thathe duly obtained the said certificate that he nor no person for him has before proved or claimed the right to land for the service therein mentioned and that John Carter brother and heir of the said William is under twenty one years of age now living with him the said John.
I am unable with any certainty to identify either father or son.
