Phoebe Carter, who married Presley Jeter in Amelia in 1783, and then, after his death, went on to marry a Mr. Hatchett, had her will proved in Lunenburg County, VA in 1819. The Jeter Mosaic has identified her as the granddaughter of Minor Wilkes and Phoebe Stone. However, this is not possible.
Minor Wilkes and Phoebe Stone were married around 1760, as the boirths of their chidlren also attest. Phoebe Carter was born, according to this same Jeter Mosaic, in 1751. Even if this 1751 date is wrong, there is no time for one of the daughters of Minor Wilkes and Phoebe Stone to have been born around 1760, married a Carter, and then have daughter Phoebe, who is old enough to marry in 1783. Twenty three years (maximum) is just not enough time for all of that, unless the ladies are getting married and having children at the age of ten!
HOWEVER, a daughter of Minor Wilkes and Phoebe Stone, Mary (c.1770 - 1832) does marry a Carter White Jr. in Lunenburg c.1791. Carter White Jr. is the son of Carter White Sr. (1745 - 1833), who is the son of none other than John White (c.1720 - 1791 in Lunenburg) and PHOEBE CARTER (who is said to be of either Hanover County or Halifax County, VA - my money is on Hanover).
Does anyone know who this Phoebe Carter, who married John White, was?
