We now have preliminary Y-DNA triangulation back to Joseph M. Carter of Marshall County, Alabama. See Carter group I1-12 on the Family Tree DNA website.

Many say the middle initial of "M" is for Motley. I am not convinced of that but I do believe Joseph M. Carter was a son of James Carter & wife Amy Motley.

I am also not convinced that the James Carter married to Amy Motley was the same man as the James Carter who was the son of John son of Theodorick Jr., etc. I know what the General wrote in his book but sometimes the old books are wrong.
