Meadow Grove is .7 of a mile east of Marshall, VA. on south side of Rt. 710.
It was built in 1820. It was part of a grant received by "Parson" Scott in
1736. This farm became Carter property when Fanny Scott of "Gordonsdale" married Edward Carter. It descended to Edward Carter's son, Richard Henry Carter and to his daughters, Virginia and Eliza Carter in 1843. The property wa s bought by J. Alexander Carter in 1892. (who was a son of Richard Henry Carter). See article on Meadow Grove in notebook.
FAUQUIER CO., VA COURT RECORDS VOL 4 - Researched by Francis B. Foster, The
Plains, VA. 26 April 1937.
The place is well named, as the grove of handsome oak trees which surround the house and large, perfectly kept lawn make an ideal setting for a country
estate. Richard Henry Carter of Glen Welby managed the farm for his sisters,
the last of whom, Misses Eliza and Virginia, died in 1908, until J. Alexander
Carter bought the farm in 1884. In 1909 J. Alexander Carter replaced the
original house with a lovely, large frame house, where his daughters still
live, as it is now the property of Miss Edith and Miss Rebecca Carter.
