The Parents of Capt Thomas Carter, Lancaster VA
A Heinly 2/24/12
First and foremost, thank you for the overwhelming evidence of Thomas to Barford, Bedfordshire, England - to match the entry of his marriage in The Prayer Book:
"With this Book pr Rv Mr John Shepperd on Wednsday ye 4h Day of May 1670 - was Mard Mr Thomas Carter of Barford in ye County of Lancaster in Virga & Katherine Dale ye eldest Daughr of Mr Edw: Dale ye same County". [Prayer Book]
However ..... although you present a POSSIBLE atlernative to his exact parents, you must reconsider the same Visition of 1634, but in London Town ..... per the excellent work of Joe Carter, whom you acknowledge in your other post:
"At the visitation of the Heralds from the College of Arms in 1634, Ansyll (Ancell)Carter of London, Grocer, had six sons living as follows: George, eldest son, John, Ansyle, William, James, and Thomas youngest son who could not have been over three or four years old in 1634". [Joe Carter on GenForum quoting Dr. Miller]
I will not quibble over two or three years difference in the proposed dates of birth (1630 viz. a viz. 1633) ..... but ..... one should take note of the entry in The Prayer Book, note how the Best Guess matches the date of birth of the LONDON Visitation:
"Thomas Carter Senr. Departed this Life on the 22d ofOctober 1700 Aged about 70 years". [Thos. Carter, His Prayer Book, Library of Virginia - born 1630]
Most tellingly, one MUST place great emphasis on the exact words of Aunt Fanny:
"The first one of the Carters was my grandfather's grandfather Thomas Carter son of a London merchant of good family .... "Our old Ancestor Thomas Carterwas about 21 years old when he come to Lancaster"[Aunt Fanny, Carter MSS 1858 of John of the Nest]
It's a subtle point, but Dr. Miller did make a notable observation: "The names of Henry, Edward and Daniel appear among the children of those sons of William and Mary Ancell Carter, of whom we have record" ..... where ..... those three Christian names are for the fourth, first, and then seventh sons of Thomas and Katherine Dale Carter.
I would have to stay with Ancell and Jane Myles Carter as the parents.
