Just about any surname spelling back in those pioneering days could have been close, Many were spelled using "soundx"...this was the spelling way of the literate when gathering data from those that did not read or write. I have seen Chancy or Chancey spelled different ways, however...never without the h.
There were the following surnames in the south with the following spellings:
Counccill, Counce, councellor, Council, Councill, Coundeth, Counsel, Counsell, Counsil
I will certainly keep this one in mind, because there are some Chancy deeds found n the greater Orangeburg area,
