You need to look at two things.First you check the Y-DNA haplogroups. Are they the same?If they are the same, then you check the Marker Numbers. How many of the Marker Numbers are the same? The closer the match, the closer their Most Recent Common (direct paternal line) Ancestor (MRCA).Conversely, the greater the differences between two test results, the more generations have passed since the two men shared a direct paternal line ancestor.
The testing service that I have used is Family Tree DNA.I wrote these instructions for their service:
The Family Tree DNA website has a tool for estimating the number of generations between two different men who are at least something of a match.I recommend using their tool to get an idea of how long it has been since their common paternal line ancestor.
Login to the Family Tree DNA website ( http://www.familytreedna.com/http://www.familytreedna.com/ ) using the Kit ID Number and secret password.
Go to the Y-DNA Matches page.
Look for the name of the man you are interested in.On the far right on the same line as his name there should be a blue and red icon.Click that icon.
The computer should display a Comparison Chart with two columns: Generations and Percentage.I generally like to go with something around 95%.
