Robert Carter of Cartersville
Robert Carter of Cartersville is known to have had four sons; Robert Jr., Thomas, John, and Charles.
What happened to Robert's son John is a mystery to me.I have not been able to untangle the many different men with the name John Carter in Virginia.I don't know what happened to this John Carter.Maybe he moved to Mars.(For you Edgar Rice Burroughs fans.)
Robert's son Charles purchased land in Lunenburg County, Virginia in 1763 and sold it in 1764.I don't know that he ever lived there.Mecklenburg County, Virginia was formed from Lunenburg County, Virginia in 1765.
The date of Charles' death is still disputed by some researchers but I hold that Charles died in 1777.As far as I know, Charles never lived on the land he owned for one year in Lunenburg County, Virginia but his brothers Robert Jr. and Thomas did live (and die) in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
Some of the descendants of Charles, son of Robert of Cartersville, stayed in central Virginia. Some of them moved to Mercer County, Kentucky.
Little in known about Robert Jr.I know of two sons;Giles and Robert (3).He may have had more but these are the only two I know. This name Giles Carter sparked a lot of speculation that this Carter family was related to Giles Carter of Henrico County, Virginia but I think it was just a coincidence.I think there was a different source for the name Giles in this Carter family. It may have come from his maternal line.Forenames don't always come from just the paternal line.
Giles Carter, grandson of Robert Carter of Cartersville, moved to Guilford County, North Carolina.I think he lived in the part of Guilford County, North Carolina that became Rockingham County, North Carolina in 1785.His wife was named Anne. The Carter family of Laurens County, Georgia *MAY* be descendants of Giles Carter of Guilford County, North Carolina but this is only speculation.
Robert (3) had only one known son and that son had the unusual name of Secretary Carter.(I'm glad it wasn't John!)Why he was given the name Secretary is a mystery to me.I know of no connection between the Robert Carter of Cartersville family and John "Secretary" Carter of the excessively famous (and frequently incorrectly adopted) Robert "King" Carter line of "Corotoman" / "Shirley" / Lancaster, etc., etc., etc.The name Secretary may have had meaning in his maternal line. Her original surname is not known.
Thomas Carter, son of Robert Carter of Cartersville, had three sons; Thomas Jr., Charles, and John.I am actually descended from both Thomas Jr. and John.
After the death of Thomas, son of Robert of Cartersville, his three sons, their families, and also their cousin Secretary Carter moved to Oglethorpe County, Georgia. This was around 1802.Some of them later moved to Walton County, Georgia.
Charles Carter (grandson of Robert Carter of Cartersville) had two known sons; Edward and Robert G. Carter.A descendant of Edward [Kit # 51877] and a descendant of Robert G. Carter [Kit # 68099] have each done the Y-DNA test. They are Y-DNA Haplogroup "Q".
Thomas Jr. had four known sons;Jesse, Charles (yes, another Charles Carter), Thomas (3), and William. The wife of Thomas Carter, Jr. was named Elizabeth but she was NOT Elizabeth Griggs-Doggett.That Thomas & Elizabeth Carter were a different couple.Yes, there were two couples with the names Thomas & Elizabeth Carter. It happens.Just because the names are the same, doesn't mean they are the same people.
John had three known sons; Wylie (Wiley), Paul, and Magnus.
