Benjamin Carter-VA, NC & SC connect to G(iles)
Posted by: joy carter johnstone Date: September 03, 2001 (proven outstanding researcher)
There are three Benjamin Carter I am trying to connect in proper place. I believe they all connect to Giles Carter.
Benjamin -- Will in Henrico Co., VA dated October 1796 -- Will Book 2 page 456--wife Elizabeth, children Tabitha, Lucy, Frankey, Theodric and Nancy. [son of Giles Jr. and Mary Povall is theonly KNOWN possibility - therefore Uncle to Benjamin next]
Benjamin -- Will dated August 1796 Halifax Co. NC -- wife Mary no children mentined.
[NOT Halifax VA, known Giles country - immediately Northwest of the NC county]
Especially with no children, PROBABLY son of Daniel Carter d. 1798 Powhattan Co VA,
son in turn of Giles Jr. and Mary Povall.
Benjamin -- Will dated February 1830 Camden, SC Will Book N page 237
no wife-- sister Margaret Alexander (m. Dr. Isaac Alexander--Camden SC 1801) Nephews John C. Carter, Benjamin Carter, Alexander Carter (sons of Benjamin's brother Daniel, Jr.), Milton Carter and Anderson Carter. Niece Susan, daughter of brother William; Nephew John and his sister Margaret Reese; Niece Betsy and Susan DuBose; Sister-Susannah Story (or Stovey); Nephew John and Nephew in law Horatio Reese.
Does anyone have anything on any one of these Benjamin Carters?
Thanks, Joy

Name: Daniel CARTER 1
Birth: 27 NOV 1761 in Sumpter District, South Carolina
Death: 2 JUL 1844 in Williamson County, Tennessee [later Giles]
Event: Commissioned ABT. 1776 Calvary Lt. in Revolutionary War
Reference Number: 1350
Note:
If Robert Carter of South Carolina was a son of Daniel Carter, who died in Lancaster County, Virginia in 1759, then this son of his was probably named for his father after he heard of his death. Daniel Carter of South Carolina was a lieutenant of calvary in the Revolution, and after the war purchased and settled on a part of his brother's grant in Tennessee.
Was pensioned in 1833 from Maury County, Tennessee for services as a private and Lieutenant, South Carolina Line. He was born in Sumpter District, South Carolina. Died near Franklin, Tennessee (found in "DAR" vol.80 pg.114).
Title: Daughters of the American Revolution
Text: Generations from Daniel Carter through the children of Claiborne Hayes Overton are proven in National Numbers 382,861; 385,062; 385,061; 385,060; 385;063 and 385,064

"Uncle Joe and Uncle Tom after grandfather died moved to the southern counties, Mecklenburg
I think & John later on to Carolina".[One of very few discrepencies discovered] - and -
Robert had a quarrel with Dad and was not heard from again.
"Father & all his brothers in the War of Independence" - consistent with patents in the Carolinas.
Website of John Durst:
A book was written about my Mom's side of the family by my Grand-Uncle, William Rivers Pope. History of the Pope, Carter and McFerrin Families. Mom's side of the family has a long history in America, going back on her mother's side to at least 1650, and her father's side to at least 1655. Family members may be interested in downloading the full Ancestor Tree.
Mom's Grandmother's maiden name was Myra Belle Carter. My Mom's 7th Great-Grandfather, Capt. Thomas Carter, purchased his first land in Lancaster County from Col. John Carter on June 1, 1654. He settled in Barford Estate, Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County, Virginia. He was a Burgess in 1667. His son, Thomas Jr., was also a Captain in the Lancaster Militia, and was the first in the United States on that side of the family to appear in Court records as a lawyer.
[ ... misses two generations?!?!?!?! ... ]
Thomas's son Daniel, born in 1761, was also an attorney. Daniel fought in the Revolutionary War from the age of 17, and was a Lieutenant in Hampton's South Carolina Regiment. After the Revolutionary War, he and his brother, Capt. Benjamin Carter, received a grant of 5000 acres from the State of North Carolina for service in the Revolutionary War, and moved to Maury County, Tennessee, just south of Nashville.
Daniel's son, Benjamin Carter, born in 1792, became a Doctor and businessman in Giles County, Tennessee. He became a prominent member of that County, and is written about in every history of the County. I visited Pulaski, and found lots of documents on my Mom's family. (His nephew, also named Benjamin Carter - after Daniel's brother - moved to Austin, Texas, and became mayor of Austin. When the Civil War started, he was an officer in the Confederate Army, and was killed at Gettysberg. Here is his Battle Report concerning Antietam.)
This picture shows the Carter plot in Maplewood Cemetary, Pulaski, Tennessee, with 4 generations of Carters.
