It sounds like you have been doing genealogy research for almost as long as I have.
For how many of your lines, or "tracks" as you call them, do you have DNA confirmation?
My Carter line ("track") is Y-DNA Haplogroup Q.The Y-DNA data is publicly posted on the Carter Cousins Y-DNA Project website.Anyone on the Internet can go to their website and check the data.
According to the Y-DNA, my Carter line ("track") is Scandinavian (Viking). It may have entered England with the Norman invasion of England in 1066 or it may have been an earlier direct introduction.

"The Vikings, seafarers from Scandinavia who travelled widely and settled in swathes of Northern Europe, the British Isles and the northern Atlantic from around 750 to 1050 AD, were skilled navigators, able to cross thousands of kilometres of open sea between Norway, Iceland and Greenland."
I agree with you that a lot of incorrect claims have been made over the years.DNA testing is the only way to confirm the biological relationships and verify the claims.
If you can find a man with the surname of Carter from your Carter "track" and get him tested and if you find out that he is "Q", please let me know.
