Jerry,
Obviously, there were many Thomas Carters at this time in history. The Thomas Carter who ended up in Rockingham Co., NC said on his pension application that he was born in Maryland, ca. 1746, and enlisted for the war while in Halifax Co., VA. I'm assuming he was living there when it started but possibly could have been a late arrival. A few of the Maryland soldiers named Thomas Carter wouldn't seem to be the same as the man who settled in Rockingham Co., NC because of the timing.
My dilemma is that my Guthrie ancestors seemed to have always been in Halifax Co., VA. Thomas Carter had been there at one time. In the 1790 Census of Rockingham Co., NC, Thomas Carter's immediate next door neighbor was a Thomas Guthrie. About 1796, Thomas Guthrie left Rockingham
Co., NC and moved to Lincoln Co., NC along with members of the Low(e) family. The eldest son of Thomas Guthrie was named Carter Guthrie so I'm thinking there's got to be a relationship between Thomas Carter and Thomas Guthrie. (A couple of Thomas Guthrie's children married into the Low(e) family). DNA tests have revealed that I match a descendant of this Thomas Guthrie, formerly of Rockingham Co., NC, in 66 of 67 alelles....essentially denoting we are of the same family. At this point, I can't make the match to a common ancestor. I was looking for someone who might have extended knowledge of the entire Thomas Carter family.
