It took a while to sink in, but realized you were talking exclusively of Sarah Muse.Let me make this very clear: the BROTHERS George and Richard Carter of Prince William were NOT the George and Richard in Halifax / Pittsylvania, who are proven in Pr. William in 1782 below by the will of their mother - Richard was her Executor! Their father William is of the Giles of King George Clan (not even the Giles of Henrico per Gen. Carter).Someday ... our website will reconnect to the outside world.
Once again, CAPTAIN George Carter of Pittsylvania was already in Montgomery County VA by 1780 - that's what I was trying to say at the end of my last message. He is NOT the son of Sarah Muse - he was born next door at the Overwharton Parrish, Stafford County!Note how Ms. Harbury makes the distinction below between the two George Carters from the store account book.
By the way, there was ANOTHER pair of (related) George and Richard Carters in (today's) Halifax - of the Giles of Henrico Clan.See Joe Carter postings herein.
Exact Cut & Paste from our notes - where a FEW of us have been working on this for more than a FEW years
"Let's make this clear: it is Sarah UNKNOWN Muse Carter Thorn Wilson. The lady got around. Thorn research shows William Carter III - we now have proof they (understandably) got just a wee bit confused with the William Carters, in addition to the early gross errors from Gen. Carter.
"Some believe Sarah was separately born to John and Ann Hopkins Muse; first husband Unknown Muse (with notation that no probates anywhere in the area are found). Marriage 2 William Carter b: ABT 1710 in King George County, VirginiaMarried: ABT 1729 in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Virginia. They then show Richard Carter m. to Agnes and they had a daughter Catherine m. French.

Kent, We Must talk! Sarah Thorn of Prince William Co., VA is my 6th great grandmother. Sarah married Henry Wilson after the death of William Thorn in early 1762. Sarah & Henry were divorced in 1766 & have the transcript from Sparacio on that event. How have you deturmined that Sarah was born in Scotland? In the research by others I see her as having the surnames Jackson, Muse, Carter, Thorn & Wilson. Sarah is known to have the following children, Elijah Muse, George, Elizabeth & Francis Carter, & John Thorn. Husbands first names are unknown prior to William Thorn. Sarah was Admix of William Thorn's estate.
"Carter Children named in Mother's Will 1786 [sic] Posted by: Jacob ThornDate: August 10, 2005
"In the Will of Sarah Wilson of Prince William Co, VA 1786. [sic} She names her children Elijah Muse, George Carter B@1730, Robert B@1733, Elizabeth(Summers) B@1735, Barbary(Peak) b@1738, Jemimah(Williams) b@1742, Francis(Cockrill) b@1745 (Francis is often thought to carry the surname THORN) & John Thorn b@1748.
"[Dates are pretty good, but it is clearly Richard, and not Robert Carter; Katherine Harbury adds Chandler b.c. 1740 - need to verify that he was apprenticed at the age of 14 --- and --- that he was son of William Carter.].
"1.Chandler Carter, the son of Sarah Muse, can be found in Pr. Wm. County, Va. Order Book 1754-1755, p. 8, 25 March 1754… son of William Carter decd.- apprenticed to Solomon Jones to learn blacksmith trade.
[In a separate email: 6. Chandler Carter, b c. 1740, apprenticed to Solomon Jones in 1754 at age 14; never seen again in the records in Pr. Wm. Co. or elsewhere.Probably died young".
"Need to find this document!Does it say "Sarah Muse" --- and --- "son of William Carter"?
"2. Frances, the youngest daughter of Sarah Muse, was nee Carter, not Thorn. This is proven in Pr. Wm. Co. Order book, 1761-1763, p. 114, 4 May 1762, Sarah (Muse) Thorn wasappointed guardian to her two youngest children, John Thorn and Frances Carter,
"May 4 1762 - SARAH THORN is appointed guardian to JOHN THORN and FRANCES CARTER ,Orphans, who with WILLIAM ELLZEY Gent.(attorney) and RICHARD CARTER (son) entered into and executed Bond for her faithful performance. {lbid., p 114}

"Email of Katherine Harbury of 04 Aug 2008:
In 1765, according to a correspondent, a George Carter was taxed for 585 acres of land once Thorn's, and which John Thorn inherited. With his mother Sarah (Muse) Carter-Thorn-Wilson 's 1/3 dower, it added up to some 800 acres or more...she was old enough to be levy free. Her son John Thorn later inherited all of it.
I have not see this document - this was about when I had to stop researching for a while.
"We thus have two separate George Carters still in Pr. Wm. Co. in 1765.Sarah (Muse) Wilson's will did not state where her sons George and Richard Carter were then living-which is too bad. [A son George would not be in the will if he were our Capt. George well proven in Montgomery County by 1781! ]
"However, in June 1766, in Pr. Wm. Co. Deed Book Q, 1763-1768,p. 404, Sarah (Muse) Wilson made a deed that makes it clear that she obtained a complete divorce from her husband Henry Wilson. Her son George Carter, an Isaac Davis, and a Cumberland WIlson of DIttengen Parish on behalf of Sarah...pay Henry Wilson and his attorney...Sarah described herself as the wife of Henry Wilson and formerly a widow of William Thorn and that she and Henry agree tobe separated [sic]- and "mutaully absolve and desolve their marriage vowes..." etc.The record also refers to slave George and James... Sarah also quits any claim to Henry's assets as his potential widow, etc. (This was not the usual separation of bed and board that happened to most but a genuine divorce)...this was presented in court 3 November 1766...the bond from George Carter, Isaac Davis and Cumberland Wilson wa sproved by Howson Hooe, Gent., ome of hte witnesses... (the other witness was William Gardner... Hooe said it was the act of these three men and admitted to record on the motion of Henry William Wilson...[sic].
"While we know this particular George Carter was present in the county in June 1766, it does not mean he was necessarily still there by November 1766… [Date of Patent of Capt. George Carter of Stafford - again, her George and Richard are plainly in Prince William, or very nearby, in 1782]
"Then in another deed dated 11 Sept. 1777 by Sarah Wilson and her son John Thorn is an indication that her son George and possibly son Richard were no longer living in the area? In Pr. Wm. Co., Deed Book T,1774-1779, p. 431,she and her son John Thorn of Pr. Wm. Co. give a Sarah Carpenter to have a piece of land for 14 years, commencing the following January... quit rent, etc. - she and her son signed the deed with witnesses named Sam Byrne and Geo. Ramie or Rainie?
"I believe our Capt. George Carter is the George Carter who obtained 354 acres by patent on 20 July 1768 in that region of Virginia because one of the neighbors was named Thomas Walker.I do not believe this is a coincidence, but would like more and better documentation. [She later explains that some believe Frances, wife of Richard the blacksmith, was a Walker]".
