As a minimum, you are missing a generation; we have no further info but the son of John Carter instant is posted on Carter Cousins: James Carter married Amy Motley [1771-1834] Married: 13 FEB 1799 in Pittsylvania County, VA. This certainly "leaves room" for a James Thomas Carter ca. 1820.
