Wythe County Order Book. 14 Apr 1796 – William Carter again appointed overseer of the road. Wythe County Order Book. Special Note: Harbert's Ferry is clearly shown on the Settlement Map of Wythe County (annotated Kegley) just above the community of Poplar Camp, and just across the road from the Shot Tower on the river. Point is, the original homesite of Col. Walter Crockett, with his lead mine(s), dominates the area to the immediate south of this. We now know of course that William Carter's daughter Elizabeth married Samuel (Jr.), son of the Colonel; it is reported that Crocket's Cove is named for their son John. We should revisit the 1789 and 1790 Tax Lists for the presence of the whole of the Crockett family. The 1800 US Census for Virginia and Kentucky were, of course, lost in the burning of Washington in 1812. The next sighting of William instant is for his first three patents, filed together on 19 January 1807, on the Waters of the Cumberland River in Wayne County, Kentucky, per the complete listing below.
