Thank You Edgar. For the public record, Edgar and I are trying to define his ancestor Capt. John Carter, who is somehow closely tied to our Capt. George Carter. The name Francis Jackson Carter is the least common denominator, while the Evans and Crockett are important links: The Overwharton Register says that James Carter, "an honest good man," died Oct. 24, 1745. The will book for this period is missing, but the old order books show during the next ten years numerous mention of Charles Brent as executor of "Mr. James Carter, Decd" and also guardian of his younger children. From the old Carter Prayer Book and the Overwharton Register we find that James Carter had issue as follows: First Marriage. [from Prayer Book] I. Thomas Carter, no other data. 2. Daniel Carter, no other data. 3. Hannah Carter, no other data. 4. Presley Carter, no other data. Second marriage. [from Overwharton Parrish] 5. Joseph Carter, born in 1725, Probably in Lancaster at his grandfather Brent's in accordance with a custom of those days. 6. John Carter, born May 7, 1727, in Stafford. 7. James Carter, born Mar. 3, I729, in Stafford. 8. William Carter, born Jan. 11, 1731, in Stafford (twin). 9. George Carter, born Jan. 11, 1731, in Stafford (twin). (d.i.f. - the reason for William as the first born of George next) 9a. George Carter born 25 March 1733 10. Catharine Carter, born April I, 1735, in Stafford. 11. Hugh Carter, born Nov. 8, 1740, in Stafford. 12. Charles Carter, born Oct. I0, 1743, in Stafford. *** There is scattered evidence to suggest our George was in Pittsylvania County, Virginia along the way *** The 1782 Montgomery County VA Personal Property Tax List (Wythe from Montgomery in 1792) Bean - (illegible), James Jr., Carter - George ............ 2 Tithes, 5 Blacks, 11 Horses ...... William Sr. is still at home Evans - Jesse, John, Theophius, Thomas, William (not seen together) 20 Aug 1783: The only mention of Jesse Evans: Montgomery County VA Deed Book A (1773-1789 ... before split up), pg. 67: Wylie to Crockett "Reed Creek, Branch of New River, adj. land sold earlier to Jesse Evans ..." The 1784 Transaction from Gray to Adams adjacent to the 88 acres of George Carter on the south bank of the New River, just below Reed Island Creek, today's Pulaski. Two things: 1) this is the first mention of George, in reference, in deed, or as a witness, 2) there are a few subsequent listings for him in both his subsequent purchases ... and ... as a witness to other transactions. All taken together, this implies our George arrived in 1781 or 1782, along with Thomas Evans This of course is right after the war ..... and ..... would fit with a proven removal from Pittsylvania as Commissioner at this exact time ... 1783 ... as cited above. Once again, this is implication and not proof. Many thanks to Edgar "Russ" Brally for his many emails and postings: Schreiner-Yantis: Montgomery County, VA Circa 1790, Published 1982.
