I also just want to point out that the name Thompson is exceedingly common in the New River Valley.Apparently, Rev. John Thompson was a highly respected Methodist minister. The Carter neighbors across the river were Thompsons and Sayers. One of them was named John Thompson Sayers and Thompson is a common middle name in about 2 dozen families at that location.Again, I believe Mitchell and Thompson were middle names. My own ggg grandfather was named John Saunders Bralley. The next door neighbor was John Saunders and the Saunders family were all around. Most of the people in that area were Methodists.
In fact, my line is like this:
John Bralley (1740?-1797)
James Bralley (1764-1854)
John Saunders Bralley (1798-1866), married Jane Ann Carter, daughter of Mitchell Carter and Idress Craig.
Mitchell Carter Bralley (1826-1898)
John Saunders Bralley (1856-1936)
Edgar Mitchell Bralley (1886-1928)
Edgar Allen Bralley (1912-1989)
Edgar Mitchell Bralley (1953) - still carrying the name Mitchell!!
