If not ... then the son of Edward of Westmoreland

John 1728 as Father of Mitchell and Thompson Carter

Ah So - John as a father of Mitchell is beyond a "tradition"!What more can you tell us about the Manuscript of Nellie Carter?
Five things from our updated notes:
1. The DAR listings show our George as a Capt., but not John 1728 m. Mitchell
2. The Mitchell marriage somehow becomes a very important connection in all of this, yet Edgar Bralley correctly points out that John 1728 would have been in his late fifties if he were the father of Mitchell and Thompson.Ergo, we agree for dirrerent reasons.
3. Our Capt. George had a brother John born in 1727; however, brother John is well documented with marriage and children in the Overwharton Parish Register, and with two generations of probate in Stafford.
4. A Capt. John Carter is very probably a son of either Daniel or Edward of Lancaster, hence a first cousin to our Capt. George from Stafford County VA - the source of the Thompson, Daniel, Richard and Presley tradition of given names in this line of Carter.
5. Edgar later reports: "The Jackson Carter, who was a son of Mitchell Carter and Idress Craig, was more acurately Francis Jackson Carter".
In other words, we have proof of two Francis Jackson Carters - a generation or two apart - in Wythe County VA!Now do you believe us when we say Capt. John Carter "from eastern Virginia"is very closely related to our Capt. George? From Dr. Miller (quite accurate in the early generations - he goofed up later on):
The Carter MSS. of 1858, says: "Grandfather's brothers James and Edward, settled
in Westmoreland and had big families. James married a Miss ..... and had sons, Tom
and Edward, and three or four others. Some of the Neales and Popes are descended
from him. Edward married a Miss Betty Heale and had sons, George John, Edward and
Charles, who *** all moved away after the war of Independence ***." In a list of slave owners
in Westmorland county in 1782 there appears the names of a John Carter, owner of 20
servants, and a Charles Carter, owner of 19. They may have been the above mentioned
sons of Edward Carter. [Our added emphasis - sic for Betty Heale, should be Neale].
Said Edward Carter is a proven first cousin to Capt. George Carter instant and is the more likely candidate: the Neales are the source of the given names of Thompson and Presley for the grandchildren.
