The third ferry on the New River, located at Carter’s near present Loneash, was probably first known as Peirce’s Ferry when the land was purchased by John Craig from William Pierce. In 1779 Craig had the license. When he wrote his will in 1805, he devised the Peirce’s Ferry, which he called the Pearce’s Ferry place to his daughter Idress, who was the wife of Mitchell Carter. In 1840, they conveyed the land to Craig Carter and his sister Elizabeth. In 1869, the ferry place was transferred to Franklin Carter. In 1916, the owners of the ferry place were Dora A. Carter, E. C. Carter, Nellie Cleveland Carter and M. V. Carter. Alexander Lawson, a North Carolina native, was designated as ferryman in the 1880 census and lived near Margaret Carter. It seems likely that he was associated with Carter’s Ferry, although this is not definite. Kegley, Bicentennial History of Wythe County, p. 65.
