Thank you for the reply. There must have been a lot of James Isbell's running around Fayette Co., IL back then. The James Henry Isbell I am looking for was born in Warren Co., Ky, and per his obituary is the son of James Isbell. His obiturary reads: "Ramsey News Journal, 27 Sep 1912 Fought at Chickamagua in the Civil War. Afterwards, settled in Fayette Co., IL near Ramsey. Married Mary C. Carter from Atlanta, GA. They established an apple orchard in Illinois. Were neighbors of the H. L. Hunt family. James Henry Isbell b l9 Aug l842 Bowling Green, KY son of James Isbell d 2l Sep l9l2 bu Ramsey Cem. J. Henry came to Salem, IL (Marion Co.) in l860. He enlisted in the Union Army, Co. E lllth IL Inf. Of the l00 men in the company, only ll survived. He m 4 May l864 Mary Carter of Chattanooga, TN. They made their home in Springfield, IL. 2 sons: Charles of Ainsworth, NE and Louis of Bayle City, IL as well as the wife survived. Ramsey News Journal, 27 Sep l9l2." I have found a likely family in the 1860 census for Muhlenburg Co., KY. The obituary says they were married in May of 1864 but at that time his unit was directly involved in the Battle of Atlanta. Reading later census' for James & Mary place the year of their marriage in 1865. That makes me think they probably met in 1864 but married after the end of the war. After the war they lived in several Illinois counties. In 1870 they were in Franklin Co., IL. In 1880 they were in Mechanicsburg, Sangamon Co., Il and by 1900 they were finally in Fayette Co., IL where they seemed to have lived out their lives. Both are buried in Ramsey Cem. Another reason I am suspect of the James - Paschal connection is that James enlisted in the infantry in Marion Co., not Fayette. One frustrating thing is that data in obituaries can be very questionable. In this case his unit's Civil War record doesn't support their presence at Chickamagua or the causualty rate reported in the obit. Likewise the obit reports her middle initial as "C" when it shows in the census it is "E". In any case knowing more would be wonderful. What could have compelled a 16 or 17 year old Georgia belle to marry a Yank from Illinois? Thank you, -Andy Notify Administrator about this message?
