I have an ISBELL by marriage in my family line, that family coming from Warren Co., Kentucky. I believe the James H. Isbell who married Mary E. Carter was a son of Paschal Isbell and Clarissa Sears of Warren Co., KY. Paschal Isbell moved his family to Fayette Co., Illinois. (One of my ancestors married K.D. (King David) Isbell of Warren Co., KY.)
James H. Isbell served in the Civil War for the 111th Illinois infantry, and he filed for a pension on Aug 5, 1890, in Illinois. His widow, Mary E. Isbell filed for a widow's benefit on Oct 21, 1912 in Illinois, based on his service. If you believe that they married in Georgia, then perhaps they met when James' unit was in Atlanta, Georgia, during the War? (I wonder if they married in Illinois, as the Carter family (or some of them) seemed to be in Fayette Co., IL too. A Joseph Carter married Sarah Isbell in Fayette Co., IL, in 1855. And William Carter married Harriet Isbell in Fayette Co. in Dec 1864. So there was definitely a link between the Carter and Isbell families.
James has a brother named Lewis (Louis) and a sister Harriet, and others. He is enumerated with his parents in the 1860 census for Fayette Co., IL. (I believe the recorder took the name down incorrectly and Paschal Isbell is recorded as Pasha Isham and James as "Jaem"!)
I hope this is helpful to you.
