Biography and Notes:
Patriot Solomon Carter F.1. Buried:
Amherst was created in 1761 out of Albemarle; Charles Carter Sr. and the Blackmores appear to arrive in 1759, while the sons of Peter appear to arrive in 1768 with the Bickley and Ellis families. The Carters are all proven to be next to each other, on The Horsley, at Tobacco Row Mountain, seven miles due west of Amherst, Amherst County VA.They are also proven right next door to Charles Taliaferro Sr. who removed to Amherst in the summer of 1758, right after his marriage back in Caroline County; he was the son of Richard who held the original patent right next to that of Edward Hill Carter, Esq. (of The King). And, Job was bondsman for Lucy in the 1766 estate of Charles Carter Sr.:
"F- Peter Carter M- Judith Norris S- Mary Ann Ellis md 1760/1770
Peter, Edward, Henry *, Job and Solomon lived in the part of Albemarle County, Virginia, that became Buckingham and Amherst Counties.Peter served in the Revolutionary War, in the Virginia State Artillery.
Peter's will was proved 7 February 1791 in Amherst County, Virginia.
Marriage 1 Mary Ann ELLIS b: 25 Dec 1747 in ,Henrico,Virginia"
* Dr. Miller himself, if anyone has ever bothered to read his text, and not just copy, explained "alternatives" for the Henry and Edward, and went on to demonstrate they were sons of a Henry.Yes, Dr. Miller made a few mistakes, but everyone has since added their own errors, including The Professionals.
Having said all that, we will concede the 1783 Amherst Tax List provides some grounds for confusion; it's just that any Carter researcher has to be aware the name Landon is exclusive to The King Carter Line, the way Peter and Job are exclusive to our Carters of Barford.Unfortunately ...... both lines share the Charles and Edward names. We now know that the 10,000 acre patents of Richard Taliaferro on The Horsley - at Tobacco Row Mountain - (the source of all of our subsequent patents), and of Edward Hill Carter on The Buffalo were right next to each other! From present day maps, one can readily see that the headwaters of both originate in the same area due west of the town of Amherst. There is no way of telling how the Tax Collector made his rounds, this is simply the order the transcriber has them in, with many households in-between each entry:
Carter, Solomon ... brothers, sons of Peter of Fauquier; Solomon died in 1786 so is not mentioned in 1788 next
Carter, Peter ..." .... George with me Peter in Amherst ... " (in 1788) - this is the ONLY Peter listed.
Carter, Edward ... this Edward is the Wild Card, sitting right here in the middle of both sets of Carter!
Carter, William ... married in 1782 and has a household of three Whites in 1783 - son of Solomon
Carter, Landon ... don't ask which Landon, but plainly on The Buffalo; separately, Edward and Secretery
John are proven with extensive holdings in the area, but did not live here!
[we now know this is the son of Wm. Todd Carter and grandson of John of Caroline]
Carter, Edw. Esq. ....28 Whites and 99 Blacks!Plainly, an extensive Plantation rather than his family.
Carter, Charles (Est.) .... the estate of our Charles Carter Sr. who died in 1766! - 0 Whites5 Blacks;
Charles Jr. came back about 1796 to collect these slaves when his mother died.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes from our Bio of Peter (his patent in 1768, Solomon's in 1767):
"Cousin / Uncle Charles Carter Senior had settled on the Horsley back in 1760 and died there in 1766; Lucy married Capt. John Blakemore in 1768 and they were the first to remove to Rye Valley / Cove, Russell Countyin 1773.Special Note: three different Carter brothers married three different Mary Ann's! Dale is now proven to Mary Ann Bickley, Solomon would appear to be proven to Mary Ann Childress, and our Peter is here proven beyond all doubt to Mary Ann Ellis (witness Josiah Ellis and the collective removal, etc.).Consistant with the 1768 patent cited for our Peter below, the whole of the Ellis family removed to Red Hill, Amherst with the Ellis / Bickley marriage in December 1767.John Bickley himself, removed from his home in Louisa to the Red Hill estate of his new bride (second marriage for both). This is all about 1768, just as Lucy Unknown Carter remarried to Capt. John Blackmore.
"Ya' Think there was something special about 1768 to our Carter family?"

GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES From the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. I. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982. Page 656. "Solomon Carter (Peter (3), Thomas (2) had a grant for 127 acres in 1767 in Albemarle county, but appeared in the census of 1783 in Amherst county as the head of a family of eight and two servants. One son and one daughter were married before this date. His will, probated October, 1786, divided a good estate between his wife Mary Ann and the following children: William, was the head of a family of three in 1783, was a private in infantry in the Revolution; Abraham, was granted 856 acres of land in Amherst between 1788 and 1822; Milla Davis; Peter; Sallie; Elisha; Patty; and Nancy. Brother Peter and son Abraham executors. Personal estate amounted to 155 pounds, 4 shillings, od."
DAR #63798. - "The name of Solomon Carter appears on the roll of Captain Charles Ellis's Company of Albemarle Co., VA [...1758...] in the Virginia Militia. The records of Amherst County, Virginia also show he furnished supplies for the Revolutionary Army."
Miller, John Lyon. THE DESCENDANTS OF CAPT. THOMAS CARTER OF "BARFORD", LANCASTER COUNTY, VIRGINIA. Harrisonburg, VA: C.J. Carrier Co. ,1982. Page 227-228. "Solomon Carter [son of Peter, son of Thos(2) ,son of Thos(1), born Sept. 25, 1739, probably King George, died Amherst, Sept. 28, 1786 *.
In 1767 had a grant of land in Albemarle near Amherst line, and had other land in Amherst by deed. In 1783 was head of family of eight and two servants. Will, probated in 1786, left land and good personal estate to wife, Mary Anne Bickley Carter, and following children: A. William, head of family of three in 1783; B. Abraham, granted 856 acres in Amherst between 1788 and 1822; C. Milla Davis; D. Peter; E. Sallie; F. Elisha; G. Patty; H. Nancy. Brother Peter and son Abraham executors.
About 1760 Solomon Carter married Mary Anne Bickley (will of her father, John Bickley, Amherst, 1793), daughter of John Bickley and his first wife, Mary Hurt....Of the descendants of Solomon and Mary Anne Bickely Carter I have no further data, but there ar esome of them now in Nelson County, VA."
See our Bio for both Mary Ann (probably) Childress AND Mary Ann Bickley, now proven wife of Dale for proof that the wife of Solomon was NOT Mary Ann Bickley. This is one of a few specific errors by Dr. Miller - however, there have been many, many more errors commited by other Carter researchers since.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The question of Mary Ann Childress Carter Goodrich - not proven, but strong circumstances:
(a marriage to Solomon has to be back in either Louisa or Amelia County)
b) According to Dr. Miller, Solomon died Sept. 28, 1786 - proven false by above citation from LVA.
Fantasy: "His will, probated 2 October 1786, divided a good estate between his wife Mary Ann and ..... "
Fact: "I leave to my wife Maryann Carter one shilling to be paid out of my Est. Item, whereas my wife
has left me and cohabits with another Man if she should have any Children after this I leave to Each
of them one Shilling to be paid out of my Est"
c) Fantasy: "Note from Van A. Stilley, Wilmington, NC. "The widow Mary Carter married John Goodrich
on 20 September 1786 in Amherst Co. Apparently the marriage ended the court adultery matter as
recorded in the November court order".
Fact: p. 572. Nov. Ct. 1786: "The Presentment of the Grand Jury against John Goodrich and
Mary Carterthe wife of Solomon Carter for living in adultery is continued."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now we have some intrigue from The Childress - which is about "95% Proof" that wife of our Solomon was Mary Ann CHILDRESS Carter Goodrich, who is now PROVEN to have had the Bastard John Childress before the start of her affair with John Goodrich!
Mary Jean follows through in a posting of 25 May 2005:
"While searching thru my family research (all paper) I came across something very interetesting and I want to share it with this you and this forum. Please give me your opinion and anyone else who reads this, I would really like to know yours as well - The source is from a seasoned [Childers-Childress] researcher whose genealogical work was well respected -

PAGE 2 - FROM VIRGINIA HANKS -[good research, faulty logic]
I have been reading a long reel of microfiled court records from AMHERST CO, VA. Found the following, which is not direct quotes, but from my wording:
I. AMHERST COUNTY, VA, JUNE 1774 COURT:
A deed from PETER CARTER and MARY ANN, his wife, to ISAAC WRIGHT, with MARY ANN assenting thereto (Proves MARY ANN's husband).
II. AMHERST COUNTY, VA, NOVEMBER 1774 COURT:
Order of the court to bind out JOHN CHILDERS, a bastard child of MARY ANN CARTER, late MARY CHILDERS, according to law. (Proven parentage of JOHN).
[1.Who was the father???]
[2. What was the age of John at this point in time? We would presume he is a teenager and
being "bound over" to apprentice some tradesman.Blackstone's Commentaries does not
address this issue; back to the Code of Virginia itself.]
[3.To be very, very picky, is "late Mary Childers" the same as "Nee - who was born Mary Childress"?
OR .... was she born Mary Ann Carter, and lately married as Mary Ann Childress?]
[This HAS to be the "spoiled" wife of Solomon; separately,- three Carter brothers EACH married a Mary Ann:
Dale Carter m. Mary Ann Bickley - she is all alone on the 1820 Russell Co Census,
Solomon m. Mary Ann Childress - this Mary Ann cited in will AND Court records as living in Adultery. *
Peter Carter F.2. m. Mary Ann Ellis]
Solomon's son Peter F.3. (next) had a daughter Kesiah whose marriage to Robert Childress
is found in The Morgan Bible of Kentucky. *
III. SOLOMON CARTER, father of KIZIAH who married a CHILDERS, had a son named PETER...so, it is possible he is related to the PETER CARTER who married MARY ANN CHILDERS. - END -"

Have just noticed the discussion on my Carter's. In The Deeds of Amherst Co., VA 1761-1807,Rev Bailey F Davis p 128 Solomon Carter's land was surveyed on "20 Nov 1765 254 a." & 4 lines below that on "5 Nov 1765 an Abraham Cilders 47 a." was surveyed. Realize Solomon's land deed was recorded later and usually assume people have been on the land earlier than when the deed is recorder. *
How does William Burks fit into the picture? He is mentioned as a witness along with Abram Carter on both the Will of John Goodrich & the Deed of Renunication by Mary Ann Carter Goodrich. A David Burks was next to Solomon in the 1783 census but not near John Goodrich in 1785. The line-up then was John Goodrich, John Sandedge, William Carter & Thomas Tucker. What I find interesting is that Mary Ann signs her name and doesn't sign with a mark as Solomon & John Goodrich did. It implies she had some education. Also in support of the Childers/Chilress connection - Mary the ux of Abraham Carter, one of their sons is Creed C Carter - p 56 of Wills of Amherst Co.,VA 1761-1865,Rev Bailey F Davis.
* In general, a true statment - you couldn't hold the land without "improvements", living on it.Need to follow through on the exact dates for all of Solomon's several holdings in the various counties - pretty sure they were "concurrent".There were of course the Quit Rents.Sub-topic: was this 1765 survey for a purchase or a patent?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Martha CARTER was the daughter of Solomon CARTER & Mary Ann CHILDERS/CHILDRES. Peter CARTER was also the son of Solomon & Mary Ann.
Peter CARTER was a dft in a Ct case on 25 Apr 1825 & had Zedekiah SHOEMAKER as his attorney. A John FLOOD dft was the next Ct case & Peter CARTER acted as his attorney. The case was dismissed by agreement of parties for Peter on 27 Sep 1825 while John FLOOD's case was dismissed against him by a jury of his peers on 24 Apr 1827. Both cases delt with debts. Don't know if there was another John FLOOD living in Amherst but assume it was the above mentioned man.
