Hi Sharon,
Yes, I certainly did receive the abstract of the will and thank you very much.
DID John marry before Mary Ann? - If John was a bachelor as the 1786 bond stated, we are not sure when he married Mary Ann Childress Carter. I recall someplace on either this forum or Goodrich forum, where Mary Ann was called "Carter" rather then "Goodrich" and that was after Solomon had died.
However, IF they did marry around that time (1786) and John wrote his will 1803, that would be 17 years later. According to the names of his daughters, one Haynes, one Tubs and two granddaughters, thats not enough time for children to get married and have grandchildren! So, it's my opinion that the one named Sally could be by Mary Ann, although I doubt it. And the rest by another wife.
I was surprised to read where he left NOTHING but ten shillings to John Goodrich and he left land and items to the daughters even after Mary Ann should be deceased, he didn't even mention his son, I found that strange, considering I see NO other son listed in the will. That is usually never the case, the son usually gets the planation and the land. Not that daughters shouldn't receive their fair share, but I never have seen that before, where the ONLY son did not receive his father's land and or plantation or both, have you?
There was something else we were discussing. It oculd have been Eva to - With regard to Mary Ann protesting the will, something to the affect that IF she had children with John, she would not get more of the estate, but I could be mistaken about that.
Is JOHN Goodrich the JOHN Childers in the will? - I think this JOHN Goodrich was born to John Goodrich and a first wife.I believe John was older then Mary Ann.I do believe there was a John Childers (aka Childress). The fact that (assumption) SOlomon accused Mary Ann of adultery and sent her off to Amherst court in November 1774, with her son and he was bound out, this boy was someone's son!Solomon would not do that to a son, even if born early in their marriage.I haven't checked Albemarle for anything to do with a John, son of Mary Ann, since it was found in Amherst, I figured that no one reported it before that time.I could be wrong. With all the researchers out there looking through the Albemarle and Amherst records, Virginia Hanks is the only one who found the notation in the Amherst Co. courthouse records.Mary Ann even had to appear before four justices, one being her step brother.
JOHN listed in 1782 Amherst?I am surprised.I only found him Amherst, 1785 with 5 in his household, so these could be his children, even though Solomon Carter said in his 1786 Will that Mary Ann was co-habitation with another man. John Goodrich is living near the Carters, Childress, Edmondson, and two other Goodrich.I didn't see him in the 1783.
Thank you for your opinion Sharon and for the abstract!I'll keep you posted.
